Can You Get an Indiana Medical Marijuana Card?
You cannot get one today: Indiana issues no medical marijuana card.

Indiana does not have a medical marijuana program, so there is no state card, no patient registry, and no licensed dispensaries. Possessing marijuana is still a criminal offense under Indiana law, even if you have a medical condition or a card from another state.

Lawmakers filed several cannabis bills during the 2026 session, including a medical and adult-use proposal (Senate Bill 286) and a decriminalization bill (House Bill 1191). Both were sent to committee in January and never came up for a vote.

The bills keep coming, though. In 2025 lawmakers filed four medical cannabis bills, including House Bill 1178, and every one died in committee. Nothing is guaranteed, and any program would take time to set up after a bill passes.

Why no Indiana Medical Marijuana Card can be issued

Indiana would first need a medical cannabis law from the General Assembly, and none has passed.

No Indiana registry program exists, so no physician certification can lead to a state issued medical card. Until a law passes, possessing or growing marijuana stays a crime in Indiana. Low THC hemp extract with 0.3% total delta-9 THC or less is the exception.

Indiana sets no age or residency rules for medical marijuana patients, because it has no program. No residency or ID check exists to pass. For low THC hemp extract, bills to limit sales by age, such as SB 138 in 2025 and SB 250 in 2026, died. Any caregiver rules would come with a future law.

Qualifying Conditions for

Indiana residents cannot qualify for a medical marijuana card today, whatever their diagnosis. Here is where each usual step stands:

In states with programs, the first step is a diagnosis on the state’s list of qualifying conditions. Indiana has no such list, because it has no medical cannabis program.
No Indiana physician can issue a written certification for marijuana under current law.
No Indiana agency takes applications, so there is no residency or ID check.

Indiana licenses no dispensaries, and a program could start only after a bill passes both chambers and becomes law. The 2026 medical and adult-use bill, SB 286, never left its Senate committee.

Medical Documentation

In states with programs, a certifying physician usually reviews your records, history and current treatment before deciding. Indiana has no certification process, so no Indiana office collects medical documentation for cannabis. Each state that runs a program sets its own exam rules before a certification. If Indiana passes a law, its rules will say which records count. Keeping copies of your records helps any physician you see.

Where do I find an Indiana
medical marijuana doctor?

There is no such doctor in Indiana today. No Indiana physician can certify medical marijuana use today, because Indiana has no program that recognizes a certification, and possessing marijuana remains a crime under IC 35-48-4-11. If a program is created, the new law will set which physicians may certify patients.

Does a medical condition qualify me for medical marijuana in Indiana?

No. Having a qualifying condition does not qualify you, because Indiana has no medical marijuana card program at all. If Indiana ever passes a medical law, that law will decide whether a physician must authorize you. In other states with medical marijuana programs, it’s usually a physician who makes the final determination of whether or not a patient qualifies.

Can I apply for a medical marijuana card in Indiana?

You cannot apply for an Indiana medical marijuana card, because no application exists, and a card from another state does not protect you in Indiana. No. Selling or buying marijuana is illegal in Indiana for everyone, patient or not. Bills that would change this, such as SB 286 in 2026, died in committee, so no age or caregiver rules exist. Low THC hemp extract may be sold, but only in packaging that meets Indiana’s label law.

What does Indiana law say about medical marijuana use?

Indiana has no medical cardholders, so the restrictions that matter are criminal ones. Possessing marijuana is a Class B misdemeanor under IC 35-48-4-11, with up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. It becomes a Class A misdemeanor with a prior drug conviction, and a Level 6 felony with a prior conviction and 30 grams or more. Growing marijuana, or knowingly leaving plants on your property, is charged the same way. A card from another state is not a defense. A first offender who pleads guilty may be offered conditional discharge under IC 35-48-4-12.

Does Indiana issue a medical marijuana card that expires?

Indiana issues no medical marijuana card, so no card term or expiration date applies to you. Low THC hemp extract needs no card at all. Its package must show an expiration date no more than two years after manufacture, under IC 24-4-21-4.

Is a card renewed in another state valid in Indiana?

No. Indiana does not recognize a card from another state, renewed or not, and there is nothing to renew in Indiana, because no certification exists. If you hold a card from another state, that state sets the renewal rules.

Does Indiana issue a cannabis ID card?

Indiana has no cannabis ID card, so the question does not arise. A card from another state is not a defense to an Indiana possession charge. Low THC hemp extract can be bought without any card.

Is there an Indiana medical marijuana card to replace?

Indiana issues no medical marijuana card, so there is nothing to replace. If you lose a card from another state, contact that state’s program; Kentucky, for example, runs its program through the Office of Medical Cannabis in Frankfort.

Is there a renewal process in Indiana?

Are there requirements for an Indiana cannabis ID card application?

Indiana has no Cannabis ID Card application, so there are no requirements to meet. SB 286, the 2026 bill that would have created a program run by a new Indiana cannabis commission, died in committee.

Can an Indiana medical card application be denied?

No Indiana application exists, so none can be denied. Other states set their own grounds; Kentucky, for example, registers an out-of-state patient only if they are 21 or older, have no disqualifying felony conviction and already hold a valid out-of-state registry card.

Because Indiana issues no registry card, no Indiana card can meet that last Kentucky rule. Check each state’s own program page before you travel.

Can a minor apply for an Indiana medical marijuana card?

No. Neither a minor nor an adult can apply, because Indiana has no Medical Marijuana Card Program. Bills have proposed programs, but none became law, so there are no rules for minors or caregivers. Low THC hemp extract needs no card in Indiana.

Is there an Indiana card application to wait for?

There is no Indiana application, so there is no processing time. Any program would need a bill to pass the General Assembly and become law, and then rules to be written. Bill status for each session is posted on iga.in.gov.

Can anyone expedite an Indiana card application?

Be wary of any business that offers to speed up an Indiana card or registration: there is no state process to speed up. When will medical
marijuana be legal in Indiana?

Nobody can say. Medical marijuana bills have been filed in Indiana since at least 2015, when Senate Bill 284 proposed a program, and every one has died.

In 2025, four medical bills (HB 1178, HB 1635, SB 341 and SB 400) were referred to health committees and went no further.

In 2026, SB 286, which covered both medical and adult use, also stalled in committee, so any new bill would have to start over in a future session.

Is there an Indiana Medical Marijuana Act?

There is no Indiana Medical Marijuana Act. Bills have proposed programs under different names, and none passed. House Bill 1311, filed in 2022, would have set up lawful production and sale of cannabis; it was referred to the Committee on Courts and Criminal Code and died there.

Can I use medical cannabis in public in Indiana?

Can someone be a medical marijuana caregiver in Indiana?

Indiana has no caregiver program, because it has no medical marijuana program. A caregiver who buys or holds marijuana for someone else in Indiana faces the same possession law as the patient. Other states set their own rules; Kentucky requires caregivers to be Kentucky residents aged 21 or older.

No. Indiana does not allow anyone, including a legal representative, to buy marijuana for a patient. Delivering marijuana to another person can be charged as dealing under IC 35-48-4-10. Until Indiana creates a program, the law gives no other answer.
